Fiscal Year 2009-2010 LIP (Young Ladies Inform Peers on What They Need to Know) (N12) In alliance with GASA, another funded project, YLIP wants to bring awareness about Domestic Violence Issues and revise the domestic violence brochure that the Girls After School Academy has already created. They hosted a successful community event that educateed young people about healthy relationships. YLIP lastly wants people to know all the different forms of domestic violence and how it can happen to anybody. *Funding Amount: $9,960.00
Tenderloin Scholarholics (N10) Tenderloin Scholarholics’ goal was to provide information about colleges and how to gain admission in to them. The given information included what requirements are needed specific to each college and university, where each is located and other valuable things to know. They wanted to encourage young teens to pursue the path of college for a better future. In order to do this, they filled their College Corner located at their afterschool center with college information, improved their computer lab and took a trip to Southern California to tour a few colleges. This project wants to change their whole Tenderloin community including the way outsiders perceive it. Instead of selling drugs, they are making legit money going to college. Instead of street gangs, they wanted college gangs. *Funding Amount: $6,230.00
Prized Linked Account for Youth (N9) Prized Linked Account for youth is a savings program whose purpose is to teach children and youth the importance of saving and spending versus spending and owing. Those that participated in the program created a savings goal for six months. They also held interactive workshops in which the youth that participated learned about compound interest, savings goals, investing, savings goals, investing and loans. Participants were divided into groups: big dreamers ages 4-10 and money makers ages 11-17. By the end of the project, both groups were financially literate. *Funding Amount: $8,080.00
Youth Advisory Board:Health Reform (N6) Youth Advisory Board is a group of youth, enrolled in Balboa High School that advocates for youths’ health rights in San Francisco. There are several ongoing projects that this project intends to maintain, those of which include Minor Consent Education. Their goal is to educate youth across the district about information regarding their given health rights. They carry out presentations in Health Education classes. In addition to their ongoing projects, this year, the Youth Advisory Board is developing a new project. The newly formed YAB project, intends to develop lessons and presentations geared towards youth about the health care reform process and how it affects each and every youth that comes in contact with it. *Funding Amount: $3250.00
Beacon Teen Advisory Board (N1): Beacon Teen Advisory took thirty-five youth, most of which battled problems or came in contact with alcohol, to share their own personal experiences with youth participating in the project, while teaching alcohol’s effects. Carried out in an effort to provide a boost of self-esteem going into high school, this teen advisory board provided activities for the youth to participate in. These activities included: making posters & flyers, posting them around various schools’ campuses, performing skits, and entertaining games. One-on-one time between youth leaders and youth participants was provided whenever there was a need or want for advice/guidance. *Funding Amount: $3,237.50
