My name is Benjamin Lau, and I'm a Peer Supervisor at Youth Funding Youth Ideas. I am currently into my third year at San Francisco State University as of the time of this writing (Nov 2009). I am an immigrant from Hong Kong, and I came over to the United States when I was six. I started at CHALK as an intern for the first year, and was hired as a Youth Evaluator a year after (being the first case of being hired from an intern at CHALK). Six months after I was hired, I was promoted to Peer Supervisor. I never thought I'd enjoy going to work, yet I love coming to YFYI and doing something that benefits the community. One of the main impacts CHALK has had on me was that during my Senior year of High School, when I lost motivation to finish the last year of school up. I was at risk of dropping out of high school, even though I had the grades to stay in. Before this time, a friend of mine introduced me to CHALK, and I started my internship. My director, Andrea helped me arrive at the realization that I was close to college, where my type of personality and work ethic would do far better. In high school, my cumulative GPA was 2.8, and I received a 3.75 during the fall semester of 07-08 at SFSU. |
